Whitianga Scallop Festival
Usually held in September at Whitianga. The Whitianga Scallop Festival showcases a collection of the finest seafood, scenery and sounds New Zealand can muster into one venue. A weekend long celebration of Coromandel seafood and cuisine.
Over 60 food and wine stalls, cooking demo’s, loads of competitions and great entertainment! On Friday and Saturday nights Whitianga’s restaurants and café’s will be cooking up a storm and hosting some great entertainment too.
K2 Cycle Race
Usually about the end of October, the start moves annually from town to town. The K2 is arguably the toughest one-day cycle challenge in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also one of the most scenic and varied. Every year the event starts in a different Coromandel Peninsula town, circumnavigating the Peninsula.
There is a range of different options for various abilities, with the full 200km solo race the really tough event!
There are three races, the 200km K2, the 100km Pearl Izumi K1 and the 50km 1/4 K race. The K2 is also one of the most scenic and varied races with the route traveling through subtropical forest, Pacific coastlines, rural farmland and the Pohutukawa coastline of the Hauraki Gulf.
Tairua Wine & Food Festival
Usually early January at Tairua School. A huge celebration of food, wine, arts and crafts. The Tairua Wine and Food festival is a ritual amongst holidaymakers in the Tairua and Pauanui area. Over 10,000 people flock to the festival each year to sample the huge array of food stalls, wine, beer, entertainment and of course stacks of arts and crafts stalls.
The event is the major fundraiser of the year for picturesque Tairua School - which sits on the edge of the Tairua Harbour and is run completely by parents and kind local volunteers.
Usually held early February at Hahei. The Leadfoot Festival is a unique weekend bringing together a mix of classic cars, vintage motorcycles, and motorsport legends.
Usually takes place mid March based in Whangamata. Beach Hop is home of New Zealand’s BIGGEST celebration of the 50’s & 60’s. Held in the popular seaside holiday resort of Whangamata, the 5 day festival celebrates the music, culture, fashion, music, hot rods, motorbikes, dancing, dragsters and scooters of this golden era.
There is always an excursion day when the classic cars take a run through Tairua.
